Home Away From Home
Learn what is the biggest mistake you can make when decorating a second home.
What is the biggest mistake you can make when decorating a second home? Answer: Decorating exactly like your first home. How boring is that? When your dealing with multiple homes always decorate them differently. Give them their own identity. You wouldn't vacation in a home that looked exactly like your primary residence would you? So why would you decorate your second home exactly like your first home? When your on vacation you want to escape to some place different for a change of pace. Decorating your second home differently will let you do just that, escape. Meet our clients Dwight and Angelia Bell. The Bell's own a home here in Tennessee and have just purchased a second home on the beach in Florida. Two very different areas of the country. Each home has it's own decor. In fact the only item that you will find in both homes is a piano. Angelia sings and plays the piano professionally, and loves to entertain friends and quests around the piano. Their Tennessee home has a relaxed traditional style and their beach home has a sophisticated modern look. When you decorate a beach home it's ok to bring a touch of the ocean into the home but, don't over do it. Take a look at the pictures. Can you see how the floor looks like the ocean? You'll notice that the drapery in the living room has coral stitched on them and the wall art is a piece of coral. The master bath has a large shell with potpourri. Our bar has a few pieces of coral and the back splash in the kitchen has a few fish swimming across it. We wanted to complement the surroundings by reminding you that you are at the beach , while not making you sick of the beach. If you find it hard to decorate in a different style don't be afraid to ask a professional interior designer for help. They have experience in decorating in all styles. They will help you find a new style that will suit another side of you. Just ask the Bell's, they're seeing themselves in a whole new light.
